Practical instructions for achieving true 1:1 physical measurement on computer monitors, tablets, and smartphones.
How to Calibrate Your Screen with a Credit or ID Card
Digital displays cannot detect their own physical dimensions. A 1920×1080 resolution can exist on a 6-inch phone or a 65-inch television. Calibration provides the essential link between pixels and real millimeters.
- Obtain any standard card: Any Visa, Mastercard, American Express, modern driver's license, transit pass, or student ID following the international ISO/IEC 7810 standard (exactly 85.6 mm × 53.98 mm).
- Open Calibration: Click the "Calibrate" button in the header or visit our Screen Calibration Center.
- Align and Adjust: Place your card directly against the glass and drag the slider until the dashed rectangle matches your card's outer boundary.
- Save: Click Save. Your calibration is stored in your browser's local storage and applies instantly across all rulers.
Understanding Browser Zoom & Operating System Scaling
When you press Ctrl + or Cmd +, your browser does not merely magnify text; it recalculates the size of CSS pixels. If you calibrate at 100% zoom and later zoom in to 125%, physical objects measured against your screen will appear 25% larger than they really are.
Always reset your browser zoom to 100% before taking physical measurements:
• Windows / Linux: Press Ctrl + 0
• macOS: Press Cmd + 0
Measuring on iPhone, iPad & Android Devices
Modern smartphone screens have toughened glass (Gorilla Glass, Ceramic Shield) that resists scratches from everyday plastic and coin edges.
Tips for mobile measuring:
- Switch to Vertical Ruler mode to use the maximum length of your phone display.
- Use the draggable caliper handles to mark starting and ending edges without touching the screen directly with your fingers while positioning.
- For small items like screws, bolts, drill bits, or rings, align the item with the bezel edge for stability.
